Seeking knowledge

…a young apprentice, Owen was that, and more.  I have only come here seeking knowledge, things they would not teach me of in college.

I spent my day with Lyn and Laura in San Francisco.  Our day was slow, contemplative, full of memories, futures to behold, and futures unspent.  Our collective futures are something different than we may have planned before Owen died.  What we have now, is a future comprised of our new selves, who we have become.  I felt comfort, acceptance, and peace in this new reality.  The water helped.  It often does.

I came away exhausted, though.  Feeling a lot, in a short period of time, will do that to a person.  So it was, for me.  I’m guessing it may have had the same effect on Lyn and Laura.  I’ll ask soon.

After our Thai lunch at a local restaurant, we drove to a hill above the ocean, Sutro Heights, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, above the old Cliff House Restaurant hanging precariously over the water.  We watched the surf, the sun’s reflection off the waves, and the activity in the park that was our afternoon’s setting.

I kept wishing that Nat and Owen were there with us.  I kept hoping that Nat chooses his time wisely in the days ahead, spends time with people he loves, and enjoys the simple joys of life – joys like watching the surf, and the sun on the waves – whenever he’s able.

Everything we observe in these moments of mindfulness, can be so much more, by realizing those moments as times of seeking knowledge.  What else should we do when we lean over a stone barrier to watch the wake from an incoming freight ship?  I’m thinking we should do the only thing we’re here to do – seek knowledge, acknowledge love.

Owen was a seeker – there was never a question about his mission.  I hope none of us forgets how important the search is, for each of us as individuals.  Nat has always sought knowledge, and uses what he learns to move forward in this life.  Isn’t that our ultimate job here?

Today was beautiful.  I came away from it with a sense of calm.  I listened to music tonight that added to the calm, and it was good.

One Response to “Seeking knowledge”

  1. It’s so funny to me how often the Gumbo Sister Ladies are thinking about the same stuff at the same time. I made a list of some of the things I was missing about San Francisco the other day, THIS day, I think. And the Sutro Baths were on that list. I think I wrote that blog probably around the time you were there. I take such joy from those moments of synchronicity. Heh, Sychronicity…the Police again…
I love you so very much.
