Family Album, Starz and Rex Smith
Nat and Owen came from a family of musicians. My aunt and uncle, Bibba and Robert, who played 4-handed piano at their two Steinway grand pianos in the living room of their home on Fayette Avenue in Birmingham, Alabama, started a tradition that lived on through 3 generations, and perhaps more if our grandkids continue. We won’t know until all of my cousins’ kids figure out their career paths. Auntie Lyn, on the boys’ father’s side, and their cousin, Laura, have both played guitar over the years. Owen was on that particular path in his last 5 years, but, was recently sent out on a mission of another kind.
Tonight, I’ll share just a portion of our musical histories. These videos are fun. They are old, and definitely from the big hair days of the 80s. Like I said, fun.
These two videos are from Nat ‘s and Owen’s 2nd cousins’ (Emmitt’s and my cousins’) careers as performers in days/years past. JFGI: Rex Smith, and Starz. A good time was had by all.
Songs for the night: You Take My Breath Away, performed by Rex Smith; and Sing It, Shout It, by Starz. Rex and Michael Lee were brothers in different bands, during the days when Uncle Emmitt (my brother) was playing bass and vocals for various bands (including his own) in the LA music scene (and sometimes, NY). This was part of my youth, a lot of who I am, and something of who my boys became.
And: Sing It, Shout It:
